Alexander Cup

The Alexander Cup was the Canadian national Major senior ice hockey championship trophy from 1950 until 1954.

History

Introduced in 1950, the Alexander Cup was created to bridge the gap between amateur and professional ice hockey and to create a new "open" level for both pros and amateurs alike that would be known as "Major Senior". The Alexander Cup was an attempt to bridge the best of pro players from across Canada with the best of the Allan Cup competing amateur Senior "A" ranks. The trophy was presented by Viscount Alexander, the then Governor-General of Canada.

In the first season, five super-leagues were constructed to compete for the Alexander Cup, by the fourth the field of competition had faltered down to only one league in the Maritime provinces. Ultimately, the cup was a failure and was retired after only being awarded four times.
